Every October the government adjusts SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefit amounts to keep up with rising grocery prices. 2026 increase takes effect today, and it touches nearly every family on Long Island who relies on food assistance. But a lot of misinformation circulates about exactly what changed and who gets helped. So let us set the record straight.
Myth: More money means everyone gets richer
Fact: The new benefit limit for a family of four in New York is $1,023 per month -- an increase of about $29 over last October. For an individual, the benefit increases to $306.
That is not much per person. The Hillreports that the benefit limit for a family of four in the 48 contiguous states is $1,023. As Money Magazineput it, that represents an increase of $29 -- or $7.25 per person.
This is a modest bump, not a windfall. The goal is to prevent inflation from eroding the purchasing power that food assistance programs provide.
Myth: SNAP only works at big grocery stores
Fact: SNAP benefits work at any authorized retailer -- including convenience stores and corner markets. If you shop for snacks, beverages, or basic packaged goods at a local store, your EBT card applies to eligible items.
That includes the Long Island Convenience Store in Port Jefferson Station. Whether you pick up breakfast cereal, peanut butter, tortillas, or bottled water, SNAP dollars apply to qualifying grocery items -- not ready-to-eat hot foods, but plenty of shelf-staples that matter to busy households.
Here is how it works in practice: a family receiving the new $1,023 maximum can stretch their budget further at checkout for staples like rice, beans, canned vegetables, and cereal. The extra dollars do not replace a trip to the grocery store -- but they do make each trip count slightly more.

Myth: Everyone automatically gets the increase
Fact: Not every SNAP recipient sees the larger amounts. To qualify, household income still has to stay below certain thresholds -- roughly $1,729 per month for an individual or $3,575 for a family of four. New gross income limits took effect alongside the benefit increase.
The USDA also recalculated net income limits and asset thresholds. The Hillnotes that the new benefit amounts and eligibility requirements are in place from Oct. 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2027.
If someone stopped receiving SNAP benefits or has not recertified their income in 2026, they may not see any new amount at all. The increase applies only to active participants.
Myth: Food stamps can buy anything in store
Fact: SNAP covers edible food and seeds -- but not cigarettes, alcohol, hot prepared foods, vitamins, or pet supplies. The list is narrower than you might think.
Here is what IS eligible with an EBT card at a convenience store:
- Bread, cereal, and grain products
- Fresh and canned fruits and vegetables
- Meat, poultry, and fish (uncooked)
- Dairy products like milk and cheese
- Snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages
- Plants and seeds that produce food for the household
And here is what is NOT eligible:
- Cigarettes and tobacco products
- Alcohol or beer
- Hot cooked meals ready to eat
- Multivitamins and supplements
- Pet food and cleaning supplies
- Cosmetics and over-the-counter medicine
Myth: The increase solves hunger
Fact: The SNAP COLA prevents benefits from shrinking -- it does not make them large enough to cover every American family's total grocery bill. Food prices at local markets have outpaced inflation for years.
According to Money MagazineMagazine, the SNAP COLA adjustments are lower than the current inflation rate of 3.4 percent, but higher than food at home inflation at 2.2 percent. And as The Hillreports: the maximum SNAP monthly allotment is changing to keep up with the rising cost of food.
That distinction matters. The benefit goes up, but it does not fully close the gap between what assistance provides and what a family actually spends at the store.
